The Health Coverage Tax Credit is designed to help pay 65% of your eligible health care premium. The IRS administers this tax credit, however Maryland (along with several other states) has been awarded monies to assist you with the advance payment program. Maryland and Alabama have partnered to bring this program to Alabama. Because enrolling with the IRS can take some time, ALHCTC is able to step in and help you with your health care premium while you complete your Federal HCTC enrollment.

Please note that ALHCTC does not replace the need to register with Federal HCTC.

Eligibility for the Health Coverage Tax Credit falls into three categories:

1) You receive benefits under Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) because your company was Trade Certified. (http://www.doleta.gov/tradeact/taa/taa_search_form.cfm)

2) You receive Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA) also because your company was Trade Certified.

3) If you receive retirement benefits from the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) and are over the age of 55.

In addition to the above eligibility requirements, participants must also have qualified health insurance.

Your COBRA coverage through a previous employer

Individual health coverage provided that you had that coverage at least 30 days prior to your last day of work

Your spouse's coverage provided his or her employer pays less than 50% of the premium on a pre-tax basis (not eligible for the advance credit)
